It's Back To School Time!! (Before reading any further, get in the spirit by watching this timeless Staples Commercial from the 90's) As you can imagine, we love everything related about going back to school - our business is built on this very principal!

You've probably seen us mention it before, but we are actively involved in the college-focused Formula SAE and Formula Student Competitions that occur all over the world. As a result, we talk to hundreds of students a year about how they use FEA and CFD when designing a small race car. Through these experiences, we get incredible insight into the training needs of soon-to-be-hired engineers. To be honest, it's how we keep our our curriculum at the top of its game.

Using FEA and CFD for Formula SAE/Student

For thousands of Mechanical Engineering students a year, this program presents an ideal opportunity to learn these tools for the first time. For example, as shown in the picture above, Monash University utilized Ansys to conduct Fluid Dynamics analyses on their car to predict it's performance (white paper HERE).

Recognizing this opportunity, a handful of CAD/CAE companies have offered various resources on this exact subject. SOLIDWORKS has a downloadable Tutorial, Ansys has several video tutorials, Altair has a handful of articles, PTC offers a Sponsorship Package, Autodesk promotes a full suite of capabilities for teams to collaborate, and Siemens even has it's own FSAE blog for teams to share ideas, tips & tricks.

In particular, web-based CAE platform, Simscale has a deep bench of content related to structural & thermal analyses and public projects to start with. They even have a 4-part series of webinars on CFD, taught by a former Formula 1 CFD Expert!

Even if you're not a student the take away is this - the next generation of engineers are being exposed to these tools in parallel to learning the fundamentals of mechanical engineering like statics, kinematics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics. They will be "armed and dangerous" when they graduate.
