Hi there,

Back in our February newsletter, we covered a handful of different industries and some common (and cool) applications of FEA and CFD that are being used in them. This month, however, we focus on an industry that wasn't included - the "Building" industry (also known as Architecture, Engineering, and Construction).

A recent trip to the United Arab Emirates highlighted opportunities for contemporary engineering practices in a very traditional industry.

This is the Burj Khalifa. When it was finished in 2010, it broken dozens of records for tallest structure, tallest residence building, highest elevator, highest restaurant, highest nightclub, and highest New Years fireworks display, just to name a few. Undoubtedly, simulation was used to ensure its safety and stability before, during and after it's 6 year construction.

In our most recent blog article, we discuss the potential reasons for this.

Above (left) we see some very tall buildings which deploy elastomeric dampers (right, courtesy of Simscale) to prevent ground vibrations from amplifying up the structure and causing damage.
